Max’s Frankelda’s Book of Spooks

Watch the trailer for this spooky musical Mexican stop-motion series!

Frankelda´s Book of Spooks, winner of Best Animated Series and Best Animation Design at Quirino Awards, is our first stop-motion series created for HBO Max. It debuted in Latin America in October 2021, immediately becoming a fan favorite. The first season's length is 70 minutes divided into 5 spooky episodes.

It is the story of Frankelda, an energetic (literally) ghost writer, and Herneval, his grumpy but faithful book. On each episode, the both of them tell a story, in which kids encounter monsters that embody their deepest and most corrosive fears. The anthology format brings a whole different set of characters to each episode, while, at the same time, gives us clues about Frankelda's and Herneval's tragic past.

When we learned that we had the opportunity to create a protagonist of a series that would travel around world with HBO Max, we realized that there were already too many superheroes, adventurers and athletes in TV.

We chose to give the spotlight to a creative character: a brilliant, but ignored, female writer who finally finds an audience.

It has been a beautiful experience for us to learn that a large sector of the audience can see themselves in Frankelda!

The series was created, written, and directed by the Ambriz Brothers, and was entirely produced at Cinema Fantasma in Mexico City.

Streaming platforms may be going all out to grow their share of the U.S. market, but some of their best shows aren’t even available in the country. Exhibit A: Frankelda’s Book of Spooks, a very charming kids’ stop-motion series, which is now streaming on HBO Max — in Latin America.
